Institute of Behavioural Sciences - Semmelweis University

The Institute of Behavioural Sciences was founded at the Semmelweis University in 1993. The mission of the institute is to strenghten the interdisciplinary research and education at the university.
The institute teaches medical sociology, medical communication, medical anthropology, medical psychology, bioethics and behavioural medicine for the medical students. The departments of the institute are: Medical sociology, Medical communication, Medical anthropology, Health Psychology, Behavioural medicine and Bioethics. There is a Sleep laboratory and a Behavioural Medicine Outpatient Clinic within the institute. The institute is the centre of  a "Behavioural sciences"  PhD programme. Since 1998  11 PhD students have got their PhD in he framework of the programme.
 
The main research activities of the institute are:
Clinical epidemiological studies in the Hungarian population for understanding the bio-psycho-social determinants of premature mortality and morbidity,
Depression and anxiety as risk factors of disorders of great epidemiological significance
Psychophysiology of depression and anxiety, sleep research
Bioethical problems in a changing society
Interdisciplinary quality of life research
The institute is actively involved into the scientific activities of the Hungarian society, the editorial office of the journal "Mental Health and Psychosomatics" is in the institute.
16 of the 31 faculty members of the institute have got their PhD degree.
