Community facilitators
One of the main focuses of the “European Alliance against Depression” is the education of community facilitators on the topics “depression” and “suicidality”. In addition to medical practitioners, advanced training courses are also provided to different occupational groups with “non-therapeutical” origin who are oftentimes in contact with people suffering from depression or being at risk to commit suicide, such as staff of helpdesks and information centers, teachers, the clergy, geriatric nurses, staff of telephone hotlines, the police, the justice, pharmacists and alternative practitioners. They play a key role in improving the early detection of depressive disorders and suicidal risk among different target groups and pose as multipliers in disseminating knowledge about depressive disorders.
All training courses for community facilitators have been adapted to the specific needs of each occupational group. For example, seminars for teachers especially address child and youth psychological aspects, whereas seminars for police officers stress the issue of acute suicidality and crisis intervention. For this purpose, seminar guidelines for different target groups have been developed pointing out the specific professional situation of each occupational group.
