Principal investigator

Dr. Ella Arensman has been involved in research into suicidal behaviour over the past 16 years, and she has been responsible for the management of studies focusing on different aspects of deliberate self harm, depression and anxiety disorders, for example prediction of repeated self harm and classification of subtypes of DSH patients, the relation between DSH and suicide and efficacy of treatments for DSH patients.
She has published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and most of the completed studies involved collaboration with local, national and international research networks and health care services.

Co-investigators

Professor Ivan J Perry is currently Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, UCC and Director of the National Parasuicide Registry. He has an established track record in chronic disease epidemiology with significant publications in major international peer-reviewed journals. Over the past five years he has developed a substantial interest in the epidemiology of suicide and deliberate self harm. 

Dr. Margaret Kelleher is Medical Director and Senior Advisory Associate of the National Suicide Research Foundation, and working as General Practitioner. Since 1998, she has been involved in national and international epidemiological studies focusing on suicide and deliberate self harm.

Mr. Paul Corcoran is working as Senior Statistician and Deputy Director of the National Suicide Research Foundation. Over the past ten years he has been involved in a wide range of national and international research projects into suicide and deliberate self harm, and he has published in major international peer-reviewed journals. 

Professor Ted Dinan is Head of the Department of Psychiatry, University College Cork and he has an established track record in the physiology and psychopharmacology of the hypothalamic–adrenal axis in depression and he has published over 180 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Psychiatrists and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Professor Colin Bradley has experience of conducting multi-method research in general practice including experience of research on educational interventions to modify general practitioners clinical practice. He has also expertise on issues in the management of mental health in primary care. He is a former Honorary Secretary of the Irish College of the ICGP and has a continuing very active involvement in development of continuing medical education/professional development for GPs.                                                             

Professor Ulrich Hegerl is Head of the Unit of Neurophysiology, Department of Psychiatry, Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich, Germany, and Co-ordinator of the European Alliance Against Depression for the European Union. He has an established track record in psychopharmacological treatment of depression. He has published over 120 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
